In the Studio

This Autumn, the Amstel Quartet will be busy recording music for two new projects: Maxim Shalygin’s ‘Todos los Fuego el Fuego’ for saxophone octet, together with the Keuris Quartet, along with laying down the final tracks for our forthcoming own CD.

Fire Piece for Saxophone Octet

Todos los Fuego el Fuego: Upon its premiere in Den Haag as part of the Dag in de Branding festival, this monumental 75-minute, 8-movement work was praised by Dutch press both for the “wondrous symbiosis...of stylistic elements” of the composition and the “phenomenal playing” of the Amstel and Keuris Quartets. With upcoming performances at November Music in Den Bosch and at Tivoli Vredenburg in Utrecht, this “Mahler Symphony for double saxophone quartet” is a substantial addition to the saxophone repertoire.

We will soon be undertaking 3 days of intensive recording sessions, with the composer directing, to document this wonderful new piece for the world. To that end, we are undertaking a crowdfunding campaign to finance the recording and production of a CD. Please have a look below and help support us:

New Amstel CD

In the next months the Amstel Quartet will also go into the studio as a quartet to complete their forthcoming CD, their first in five years.

While we can’t reveal too much yet, the recording will explore music influenced by dance and rhythmic elements, and include pieces by Torke, Lauba, Creston, and Mellits. Keep an eye out for more details soon!

Anass Habib & Amstel Quartet: Stories of the Soul

If you love Arabic music like we do, there’s some great news for you: we are currently working on a brandnew program with Moroccan singer star Anass Habib, featuring music of - amongst others - Arabic legends Oum Kalthoum, Fairuz and Sayed Darwish.

Click here for a little teaser: Ya Nas Ana Mout Fi Houbi, by Sayed Darwish, in an arrangement by Sylvia Maessen.

First concerts are planned in spring 2020 already.

A truly border crossing new musical adventure!

World Premiere of Hugues Dufourt’s “ Les courants polyphoniques d'après Klee”

Saturday 7th of December, Waalse Kerk, Amsterdam

Hugues Dufourt’s music defies any description: as one of the world’s foremost spectral composers he dives into the very essence of sound, focussing on slow transformations of musical material. Vertical sound blocks merging into each other, undergoing a compositional process that unleashes austere beauty but also violent eruptions while always keeping a certain elegancy, and - foremost - a very poetic and touching quality that makes his music a unique, out-of-the-world experience like no other.

We’ve recorded his first saxophone quartet from 1994 on our CD “1 Gram of Time” and are thrilled to premiere his work “ Les courants polyphoniques d'après Klee” composed for the Amstel Quartet 25 years later!

What’s more - the evening concert on December 7th will take place in the honorable presence of the composer, and will be preceded by an open rehearsal on December 6th.

Save the date and follow us on on our website and social media for updates and detailed program information about this unique event!
