Tour de France

For Dutchmen the Tour de France 2016 is the most successful edition in years: Tom Dumoulin took a superb solo victory in the high altitude of Andorra Arcalis and last Friday he won the time trial.

Since as long as we remember, the Dutch radio reports of the Tour-stages are accompanied by the legendary tune of Rein van den Broek.

A good moment to honor our two great Dutchmen Rein and Tom by offering a free download of the Tour de France tune played by four saxophones:

Together again

I gave my first concert with the Amstel Quartet after nearly a year during the Oedipus Beer Festival on 2 July. Last year I was diagnosed with Lymphoma, Hodgkin’s Disease. I had chemo therapy and survived. In December I had the last cycle of chemo medicine and from then the recovery started. One of the steps in my recovery was to play again with my quartet.

It was very exciting for all of us. We all changed, the quartet is different than before. And we have to get used to each other again. After several rehearsals a concert was the best way to get us united again, and feel the music of our fifth man: the music of the Amstel Quartet. Playing with the quartet was like putting on an old pair of jeans. But not quite. Because we changed. All of us. The quartet played with (great!) subs for a year, went on tour and gave many concerts without me. And I changed, one could say I developed. Physically (I have to watch my energy levels) and mentally (life is short, anything can happen).

Also this is the first concert where I played almost non-stop for an hour, on the baritone, a heavy instrument, to carry and to blow. But we did well. I could play the whole hour. We made some musical points and enjoyed playing together again.

We are planning many new things for us to do, starting next year. We’ll keep you posted!

Bas' mini test results Vandoren V21 reeds

ALERT: Saxophone Stuff for Saxophone Nerds and other people

The past few weeks I've been testing the new Vandoren V21 reeds on my tenor both during rehearsals and concerts. The quality of the reeds seems to be pretty consistent and flexible. The dynamic range got a bit of a boost, these reeds allowed me to play at greater volume than ever before. This 'new' feature is not necessarily what I was looking for. But maybe the feel of controlling the sound is something I should work some more on. It's definitely a reed that might attract a lot of tenor players.

After I'll finish these two boxes of 3 and 3,5 I'll go back to 'normal' blue box to see if it feels like home again.

About Repertoire

ALERT: Saxophone Stuff for Saxophone Nerds and other people

This time: Originals only

Paul Creston
Almost every classical saxophonist played the Creston Sonata, right? Now we're are studying his Suite opus 111. This piece is great fun! How come this is not standard repertoire for saxophone quartets? [it cannot be the wrong notes in the parts] Looking forward for our first performance of the Prelude and Rondò (Gioioso).

Thomas de Hartmann
Next october our recording of Thomas de Hartmann's Kolyadki (Ukrainian Carols) will appear on the Thomas de Hartmann Project album. This is a real gem; original music for saxophone quartet played from the composers handwriting,
